Cthulhu

John Meluch

This image is a sequel to my earlier PORTA TEMPORIS which is set in in the distant future and employs a time window which looks back in time to a scene depicting Stonehenge at the time of its creation. Conversely, this CTHULHU image includes a time window which is set in the long, long ago eon of the Great Old Ones and looks ahead to the ruins of present day Stonehenge. Together, they make a most curious set of images. The core idea of the Cthulhu MYTHOS is that Earth was once ruled by hideous creatures called the Great Old Ones who were eventually driven out. But these great beings from beyond (who are always hostile to mankind), still exist in dormant form on various stars and planets - from Pluto to the farthest galaxies. Others lurk beneath the sea, in the Antarctic ice fields, or in subterranean caverns beneath many of Earth's sacred locations......like Stonehenge. (See Colin Wilson's THE PHILOSOPHER'S STONE.) The primary stories of the Cthulhu MYTHOS were written by H. P. Lovecraft - originally, just thirteen in number. Over time, these have spawned numerous others from devoted Lovecraft disciples, notably: Frank Long, August Derleth, Robert Bloch, Robert E. Howard and Colin Wilson. As Lovecraft, the great master, explained: We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction have hitherto harmed us little; but someday the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the deadly light into the peace and safety of a new dark age. (from THE CALL OF CTHULHU)
